The market town of Tring lies at the edge of the Chiltern Hills where the ancient Icknield Way crosses the Roman Akeman Street. The Chilterns are an official Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and provide an excellent walking and leisure environment. Tring lies at the summit of the Grand Union Canal, and just north of the town are the three reservoirs built to provide water for the canal locks. These reservoirs are a haven for wildlife and attract many visitors.

The Manor of Tring is described in the Domesday survey of 1086. In 1682 the Mansion designed by Christopher Wren was built for the owner Colonel Guy. In the late 19th century the estate became the home of the Rothschild family, whose influence on the town was considerable, and is still apparent today.

Tring is an established market town, where the livestock market place has now made way for the Charter Market, which is held on Fridays in Tring Market Place on Brook Street Additionally there is a Farmers' Market on alternate Saturdays. Also in the town centre the well-known auctions are held by Tring Market Auctions on the same alternate Saturdays throughout the year. The narrow High Street is a hive of activity with shops and many small businesses tucked away in alleys and side streets. There is a full range of essential shops and services, including specialist unusual gift and food shops, plus a variety of restaurants.
